Who is an Endodontics Specialist & how they are different from a dentist?

Dentists are the savior of our defective teeth. Without them, almost no one can have a beautiful smile on their faces. Just like doctors, this field also has different types of experts. The significant difference between a dentist and an endodontics specialist is their ability to handle cases. A dentist is the one who can only cure usual pains and dental issues. If the problem is severe, then the dentist refers that person to an endodontics specialist. The fundamental difference between an endodontics specialist and a dentist is their experience. Here is a definite difference between an endodontist and a dentist:

Dentist:

A dentist is a person that studies about teeth and is experienced in solving minor problems related to teeth. Just like a doctor, who can check the diseases and treat smaller ones but cannot cure complex diseases. That is why he refer patients to a specialist of that field. A dentist does the same thing, he/she refers patients to the specialists of the respective field. A dentist is the one who offers general solutions of the problems to patients including examination, filling, hygiene, and crowns. Complex issues are referred to a specialist for further treatment.

·        Education:

A dentist has a five year of undergraduate dental training at a University. In this time, a dentist studies general behaviors and solutions for the teeth. On the other hand, a specialist in a particular field specializes in that area by exploring more about it. Here is the education of a dentist:
§  Five years of undergraduate dental training at University
·        Skills:

The skills of a dentist include different general treatments, teeth whitening, cleaning, dental implants and extractions of waste from teeth. These are the skills that a dentist have after taking five years of undergraduate dental training at a University:
§  Extractions
§  Cosmetic Dentistry
§  Teeth Cleaning
§  Dental implants
§  Simple endodontic procedures
§  Teeth Whitening

Endodontics Specialist:

Endodontics specialist is not like the regular dentist. A specialist is an expert in his/her relevant field. Endodontist also specializes in a particular area. With a skill of more than eight years, these specialists have more experience than a dentist. The patients with more problems of teeth are referred to these specialists by dentists. Here are the skills and education of these experts:

·        Education:

The training of these professionals is more than a dentist. They have five years of undergraduate training at University with additional three years post graduate study in endodontics. These three years are for gaining experience in a particular field. Here is the education of these doctors:
§  Five years of undergraduate training at University
§  Three years post graduate study in Endodontics
·        Skills:

With more knowledge comes more experience. These experts have experience in several fields. After getting expertise in a particular area, they learn everything related to this field. If the doctor is studying roots of the teeth, then he/she will dive deeply into that topic. Specializing in a particular subject allows them to treat the teeth related issues of patients in a more comprehensive way.
§  Root Canal treatment
§  Root canal retreatment
§  Apicectomies
§  Dental Microsurgery
§  Dental Emergencies
§  Trauma Management

Final Thoughts:

The conclusion that can be deduced from this comparison is that endodontics specialists are more qualified and able to cure complex diseases than dentists. They have more experience and expertise than regular dentists. Whenever a problem of teeth is complex, dentists suggest an endodontics specialist to their patients. These professionals then use their skills to cure the diseases from root canal to root canal retreatment, dental emergencies, dental microsurgery to trauma management.
